The Association wants to be by the families' side within hours of the murder or the disappearance of their loved one. From our similar experiences, we have learned that families are too often left to themselves, and that support from help agencies takes time to receive. A member of the association would contact the family in order to give his or her support.
A direct contact between families having experienced the same drama is of prime importance, and the Association gives families the opportunity to gather, speak, and help each other. The Association has as an objective to advise, and help families by being there a few hours following the event. It doesn't want to act as a substitute to known help agencies, such as CAVAC, CALAC or CLSC.
The support can be given in various ways:
- Offering direct support to the family or indirect support by communicating with the members, as the family wishes
- Offering families ways of coping with the media
- Offering legal aid, administrative support and information about the IVAC program
- Organizing internet discussion forums between elderly and youth, and volunteer or organizing face-to-face meetings
- Setting up conferences with magistrates, lawyers, psychologists, and journalists
- Offering support to families at preliminary hearings and legal proceedings
- Planning conferences with police officers about investigation files on missing persons
The Association will get involve in offering support and preventing crime by working closely with victim aid agencies.
